Tony De Vit was a legendary DJ who rules the turntables at TRADE during the Hard House days. His sets were legendary and quite often featuring a few of his own productions. His trade mark hi nrg, hard house and bounding bass line sound saw the DJ rise to super star fame, his music touching thousands. His untimely death also marked the decline of hard house...after all, no one could do it like Tony.
To mark the 10th anniversary of his death, number one fan Paul Beauchamp has organised a tribute to Tony De Vit in the form of an after hours called HOOK'D named after one of Tony's biggest records. With a galaxy of superstar DJs and some lesser know jock maestros signed up to spin, the night is to hail the man who dominated the London hard house dance floors for over a decade; with all profits going to Charity. A worthy cause all in the name of house music!
We catch up with Paul to find out how the whole event is going.
SQ: 1. HOW & WHY DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF HOOK'D? WHICH CHARITIES DO YOU SUPPORT?
PAUL: I came up with the idea just after 'The Last Dance' Trade in Turnmills, when I realised that this was going to be the end of an era, but with the huge support that Trade had that night, it was clear that something Hard house based was definitely needed and as nothing else now existed, why not take the plunge and do it myself, put on my own club night.
One of my favourite DJs of all time was Tony De Vit who found his fame DJ’ing at Trade and this year is the 10th anniversary of his death, so what better way to celebrate his life than to throw a party. Tony died from HIV related illnesses, so I thought it fitting to donate half of the profits to the charity his family donate to, which is called Freshwinds and as it’s a London based event, I thought it fitting to give the rest of the profits to The Albert Kennedy Trust, who are based in London.
SQ: WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE DJS THAT FEATURE IN YOUR LINE UP?
PAUL: There are 3 very good reasons why I have chosen these DJs for the line. The 1st being that it is mainly a gay event, hence all the DJs are gay, secondly, nearly all of them are really good friends and lastly I knew what kind of sound I wanted in each room and I knew they would all work together well in their respective rooms to take the people from start to finish in what will be an amazing journey.

SQ: IS THIS GOING TO BE THE FIRST OF MANY PARTIES OR A ONE OFF?
PAUL: Very good question? If this is as big as it’s appearing to be then yes it could go bi-monthly, so keep your ears to the ground. With all the feedback I’m getting, it is highly likely.
SQ: HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN TO A 'TONY DEVIT TRIBUTE AFTERHOURS' FROM CLUBBERS, CLUB PROMOTERS, DJS AND PEERS?
PAUL: Well this was a concern of mine as there have been a number of Tony De Vit tributes over the last 10 years and I was aware that some people were jumping on the bandwagon to cash in. I am doing this for the sole reason that I want to put on a huge successful party for all my friends and there friends who love hard house and other music styles. I was actually surprised to find that when I started planning this, there was a huge demand for this night and people were even happier that it would a night of Bouncy Hard house from Tony.
As far as support goes, Amazing!! All of my friends and most of the DJs are giving their services for free, people are even contacting me and offering to help for free just to be part of it. I’ve had some interesting comments from other club promoters but they have mostly been very supportive as well.

SQ: NAME THREE PEOPLE (LIVING OR DEAD) THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE AT HOOK'D.
PAUL: Name 3 people living or dead I would like to see at Hook’d! Well, the 1st is without any question, the man himself, Tony De Vit, the legend. He was able to transform any club into a kick arse memory and hopefully his music will do the same on July 27th. The second person I would like to see there is most definitely his sister Jane, who has been very supportive and I can’t wait to see the look on her face when she sees how many people have turned up to celebrate his life. The last person is actually Gaydar radio DJ, Simon Le Vans… He has helped me so much with advertising, press releases, contacts, information etc... You name it; Simon has helped with it, but alas is on holiday in Ibiza (bitch!) and will miss it.
